The cabin was a tiny building; a lonely, one-story affair nestled close against the shore of the lake, huddled against the tall, heavy pines that hissed in the gusting wind. A small pier stretched out into choppy waves that climbed, glossy-black, then silver, against the sanded shore. It had been snowing steadily since five o’clock, and the thick, powdery whiteness that padded out the dry beach gave the illusion that the sand itself had climbed up to claim every inch of the forest. A thick weight hung on every treetop, and puffy drifts settled like dunes against one side of the cabin, lit pale orange by a buzzing overhead light.
